Wooden rafts
have had a long tradition on some rivers in these areas but modern white
water rafting is a rather new sport. That may be the reason Croatia is not
a well known rafting destination although it does have wild and exciting
rivers that flow through breathtaking scenery.
Dobra is a dam controlled, safe river with some wild grade IV and V rapids and big waves. The usual flow is 50 cubic meters (1750 cubic feet) per second. The river gradually slows down and changes into easier rapids and calm sections. These are great to relax, swim and enjoy the scenery of forest covered canyon and trees that go all the way to the water. A great one-day trip ends after 17 kilometres at a special take out: by hot springs and a warm pool.
The waters of Cetina River are diverted to a powerplant by the sea near Split. The water regularly released into fascinating natural canyon is enough for rafting in Summer but can turn into fast and turbulent stream after rains. Usually Cetina provides relaxed, scenic rafting that invites you to play in the river or under falling water at Studenci.
The section of Una from 20-meter Strbacki Buk waterfall is great for rafting, grade III-IV at low and grade V at high water level. The left bank is Croatian, right bank Bosnian, but they are equally beautiful. The easy rapids of Kupa and Mreznica provide moderate but beautiful floating trips with more white water excitement during high water periods. The future of Dobra, Cetina and Una is uncertain. There is no Wild and Scenic Rivers Act in Croatia to protect them but there are plans to build dams that will turn them into reservoirs for energy production. Commercial rafting trips are opening eyes of the public and have sparkled protests but is there enough time? Dobra is the first to go. Would you like to do something against it? Write us, we shall pass your comments to authorities. Join us on the river, every trip we do is a step towards our goal: keep the rivers free! |
